US slides, Asia rises in global rankings of university research

JUST a decade after the first international league table was published, the global order of university research performance has been transformed, with Japan providing a solitary exception to the rise of Asia. While Japan has seen its number of universities on the Academic Ranking of World Universities drop from 36 to 19 since 2004, the number of Southeast Asian universities has increased from 26 to 58, with Chinese institutions up from eight to 32.
